We have a simple mission for our private training - ‘to give you a genuine ability using the most effective methods’.
We use a conceptual approach to training, developing key principles and methodologies which drive techniques. The techniques themselves do not exist in isolation, but only as an expression of our fundamental principles.
At the conceptual level, we train two essential elements: attitude and body mechanics. Training attitude gives us the necessary intensity and high tempo to match the reality of a fight in self-defence. Training body mechanics allows us to use and move our weight across our centre of gravity in order to dictate the outcome of the situation.
A fight in self-defence is typically unlike fighting in combat sports in that our goal is not to win but to ‘resolve the situation’. This may mean that we fight only as much as we have to in order to escape, or that we use our movement to evade one opponent in order to engage another. The extent to which we fight and the methods we use are entirely dictated by the situation and not by some pre-arranged ‘game plan’.
The need to improvise is a key driver of fighting in self-defence and it demands that our training focusses on developing body mechanics that can find a technical answer in a chaotic environment.
Throughout, our key understanding is of our own vulnerability in the fight. This keeps our training honest and grounded in reality, rather than disappearing down a technical rabbit hole.
Each lesson includes shadow fighting, work on body mechanics and movement, drilling technical elements with pads and in counter for counter drills. As skills develop, light sparring is introduced to work against resistance.
Our self-defence training includes all ranges of fighting from striking, trapping (clinch) and ground fighting.

You can start a course at any time and these classes provide a safe, enjoyable and fun way to develop your ability and fitness. Each class has a 'nucleus' such as a certain kick or punch which the class is based around. The result of the class is that you become fitter and better prepared for self-defence.
Private Tuition in Keysi is a way of training that represents the most flexible and intense training available.
Lessons can be delivered at a time of the students choosing and can be on any part of the Keysi syllabus. For example, a student may want an introductory lesson or a lesson on a specific development such as the hammers, headbutts and so on.
One-to-One tuition can augment a student's training who is already attending regular classes or alternatively can be a student's primary form of training.
Richard offers two types of Private lessons and courses - 'The Street' which focusses entirely on self-defence and 'The Sport' for those that want a Mixed Martial Arts Sports focussed course.
Some students may wish to train in Groups, large or small, choosing both the time of the class and specific development to be trained.
If a Private Seminar is required for a larger group (such as a Corporate group), please contact Chief Instructor Richard Lawrence with requirements and location details. Private Seminars can be for any number of people and will be delivered by the Chief and Assistant Instructors. We also run monthly special seminars, take a look at our "Events" page for details of the next seminar.
All lessons are discussed in advance with the Chief Instructor to ensure that the training time is maximised.
Video Analysis is provided via the Ubersense sports video analysis app, allowing a student to take home a visual record of their own training on their mobile phone, or emailed to a home computer if preferred.
Private courses can be delivered in Liverpool or Manchester. In some cases, private lessons can also be delivered at other locations or at your home. All students on courses are entitled to come to unlimited evening lessons in addition to their private training and to all monthly workshops.
Please contact Chief Instructor Richard Lawrence for further details and bookings.
